The family’s reaction to the death of Indi Gregory
In a statement released through Christian Concern, Mr. Gregory, Indi’s Father took aim at the NHS and the legal system for taking away his daughter’s “body and dignity.” He said, “Indi’s life ended at 01:45 am. Claire and I are angry, heartbroken, and ashamed. The NHS and the Courts not only took away her chance to live a longer life, but they also took away Indi’s dignity to pass away in the family home where she belonged.
“They did succeed in taking Indi’s body and dignity, but they can never take her soul. They tried to get rid of Indi without anybody knowing, but we made sure she would be remembered forever. I knew she was special from the day she was born.”
He added that his wife had “held her for her final breaths.”

Background
- Indi Gregory was an eight-month-old baby girl from Ilkeston in Derbyshire, UK, who suffered from a rare, incurable, and degenerative mitochondrial disease that meant her cells did not produce enough energy.
- She had been receiving treatment at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre since her birth on February 24, 2023, for mitochondrial disease, a genetic condition that prevented cells in her body from producing energy.
- Her parents, Dean Gregory and Claire Staniforth, wanted specialists to keep treating her, but doctors in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) said they could do no more for her.
- The parents lost fights in the high court and court of appeal in London to keep her on life-support machines and have her transferred to a Vatican children’s hospital in Rome.
- On Friday, three appeal court judges ruled that life support treatment could only be withdrawn in a hospital or hospice, not at the family home.
- Indi was last week granted emergency Italian citizenship by the country’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, as part of an extraordinary last-minute attempt to have her flown to Rome for treatment, but judges said a move to Italy was not in Indi’s best interests and called an intervention by Italian consular officials “wholly misconceived.”
