NASCAR rising star Connor Zilisch experienced a startling accident while celebrating his impressive sixth win of the 2025 NASCAR Xfinity Series season at Watkins Glen International. The 19-year-old driver slipped and fell from his car in Victory Lane, resulting in a broken collarbone and a prompt hospital evaluation.
The incident occurred just moments after Zilisch clinched victory in the Mission 200 race on August 9, 2025. Exiting his No. 88 Chevrolet to celebrate, he placed one foot on the roof and the other on the driver’s side window sill. Unfortunately, he lost his footing, with his foot caught in the window netting, causing him to fall heavily onto the pavement. The fall left him motionless briefly, prompting immediate medical attention at the track.
Medical personnel quickly secured Zilisch on a backboard with a neck brace before transporting him by ambulance to the infield care center and subsequently to a nearby hospital for further evaluation, including CT scans. Thankfully, the scans showed no head injury. After his hospital stay, Zilisch took to social media to update his fans: “Thank you everyone for reaching out today. I’m out of the hospital and on the mend already. Luckily, CT scans of my head are clear; I just have a broken collarbone. I’m grateful to all the medics for their prompt care and thankful it wasn’t any worse.”
Zilisch’s fall abruptly ended a triumphant moment that had seen him dominate much of the race. He led 60 of the 82 laps and overcame challenges on the track, including a notable incident where he wrecked a teammate but battled back to win. His victory pushed him to the top of the Xfinity Series standings with 823 points, holding a narrow seven-point lead over teammate Justin Allgaier.
This injury also affects Zilisch’s plans for the NASCAR Cup Series race scheduled for the following day at Watkins Glen. He was set to make his fourth Cup start of the season driving the No. 87 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing, but the team announced the withdrawal of that entry out of caution for his recovery. Trackhouse Racing expressed their wishes for a swift recovery, emphasizing the priority on his health.
Connor Zilisch has been one of NASCAR’s brightest young talents in 2025, with a remarkable streak that includes five wins since returning from a back injury earlier in the season. His performance has earned him recognition as a top Cup Series prospect, and he is slated for a planned move to the Cup series in 2026.
Despite the setback, Zilisch’s positive update and his gratitude toward medical staff provide encouraging signs for his return. Fans and fellow racers alike remain hopeful for a speedy recovery so he can continue his ascent in NASCAR’s ranks.
