The Trump administration recently made a controversial decision to ban Julianne Moore’s children’s book, “Freckleface Strawberry,” from schools operated by the Department of Defense. This move has ignited debates about censorship and the suppression of diverse narratives in education.

Published in 2007, “Freckleface Strawberry” is a semi-autobiographical story about a young girl who initially dislikes her freckles but learns to embrace her unique appearance. The book’s message of self-acceptance and individuality resonates universally. Julianne Moore, both an acclaimed actress and author, expressed her shock and sadness over the ban. On Instagram, she questioned the decision, asking, “I can’t help but wonder what is so controversial about this picture book that has caused it to be banned by the US government.”

The ban was prompted by a memo from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), which announced a review of library books for content “potentially related to gender ideology or discriminatory equity ideology topics.” Consequently, several books, including Moore’s, have been removed from shelves for further evaluation. Among the affected titles are “No Truth Without Ruth,” a picture book about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and “Becoming Nicole,” a memoir by transgender activist Nicole Maines.

Julianne Moore has a personal connection to the Department of Defense schools, as she is the daughter of a Vietnam veteran and attended Frankfurt American High School, a DoDEA institution in Germany. Reflecting on this, she shared, “It is galling for me to realize that kids like me… will not have access to a book written by someone whose life experience is so similar to their own.”

The broader implications of this ban have raised alarms among free speech advocates and educators. PEN America, an organization dedicated to protecting free expression, condemned the removal of these titles, viewing it as a troubling indicator of the administration’s approach to education and censorship.
