Dr. Victor Chang was a distinguished Chinese-Australian heart surgeon and a trailblazer in cardiovascular surgery and transplantation. Born in Shanghai on November 21, 1936, he was tragically murdered in 1991 at the age of 54. Dr. Chang’s noteworthy contributions to cardiology include the development of an artificial heart valve and an artificial heart assist device used worldwide for severe heart conditions. In 1986, he was honored with Australia’s highest award, the Companion of the Order of Australia, and in 1999, he was voted “Australian of the Century” at the People’s Choice Awards.
Dr. Chang’s compassionate patient approach and commitment to advancing medical knowledge have left an enduring legacy. In 1984, he established the Victor Chang Foundation, which grants funds to educate surgeons in South East Asia and support innovation in cardiac surgery. Furthermore, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, founded in 1994 in his honor, remains dedicated to discovering cures, prevention methods, and diagnostic tools for cardiovascular diseases.
