A devastating midair collision between an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army helicopter has claimed the lives of 67 people, including 14 members of the figure skating community. Among the victims were former world champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, both highly respected coaches in the sport.

The tragic accident occurred on Wednesday night over the Potomac River, just outside Washington, D.C. The American Airlines flight, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, collided with the military helicopter midair, sending the jet plummeting into the icy waters below. Rescue efforts were launched immediately, but authorities confirmed that there were no survivors.

Shishkova and Naumov, known for their exceptional careers on the ice, had won the world championship title in 1994 and later dedicated their lives to training young skaters in the United States. Their son, Maxim Naumov, narrowly escaped the tragedy, having already returned home from a competition prior to the crash.

The Skating Club of Boston, where the pair coached, has been left reeling from the loss. Among the victims were six members of the club, including two teenage skaters and their mothers. In a statement, the club expressed its deep condolences to the grieving families and honored the memories of those lost.

“The skating world has lost two extraordinary individuals who shaped and inspired generations of skaters,” said U.S. skaters Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov, who had known Shishkova and Naumov for nearly 30 years. “They were not just exceptional athletes but wonderful mentors and parents.”

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. While flight conditions were reported as clear at the time, officials are examining all possible factors that may have led to the tragic accident.

As the skating community and loved ones mourn this devastating loss, tributes continue to pour in from around the world, remembering the incredible contributions and lasting legacy of Evgenia Shishkova, Vadim Naumov, and the other victims of this heartbreaking tragedy.
