📖 Why This Fight Matters: The Full Story

For over a decade, Rousey vs. Carano was the women’s MMA fight that everyone wanted but nobody could make happen. The UFC attempted to book it as far back as 2014, but contract negotiations fell apart. For years, Rousey publicly stated she would fight Carano “wherever she wants,” and the dream stayed alive in fans’ hearts.

Ronda Rousey needs no introduction. The former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion stopped her first 12 opponents — most of them in Round 1 — and became arguably the biggest star the UFC had ever seen, rivaling even Conor McGregor in cultural reach. She parlayed that fame into Hollywood blockbusters and a historic WWE career before stepping away from MMA after back-to-back TKO losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes.

Gina Carano is widely recognized as the pioneer of women’s MMA. The Strikeforce and Elite XC star competed in what is recognized as the first nationally televised women’s MMA fight back in 2007, breaking barriers long before a women’s division existed in the UFC. After losing to Cris Cyborg in 2009, Carano pivoted to a successful acting career — most notably playing Cara Dune in The Mandalorian — but says she never stopped being a fighter at heart.

“I get to revive and reveal the fighting side of me because a lot of people either forgot or weren’t around the last time I fought. I had a whole life that opened the doors to those movie opportunities, and it was me being a fighter — a genuine fighter who broke a lot of barriers.”

— Gina Carano, April 2026

The path to tonight wasn’t easy. Carano lost 100 pounds over 18 months to get fight-ready — a massive personal transformation. The UFC had actually booked this fight for late 2025, but when Carano needed more prep time, the deal fell through. Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions stepped in and landed the bout for Netflix, making history in the process.

“I’m just trying to relish every moment and not rush through it. Five years ago I gave up the dream, and then a turn of events and I’m so grateful to Ronda for bringing me back into this.”

— Ronda Rousey, ahead of the fight

This is also a landmark night for Netflix, which is hosting its first-ever live MMA broadcast. Unlike traditional pay-per-view, the main card is included with all Netflix subscriptions — making it one of the most accessible major combat sports events in years.
